The "Grinding Paste" Effect: Because WD-40 leaves a slightly tacky residue, it acts like a magnet for garden grit, pet hair, and household dust. This debris mixes with the residue to create an abrasive "grinding paste." Instead of helping the rollers glide, you are effectively sandpapering the internal bearings and the track every time you open the door.

1. Bearing Collapse
The weight of a standard double-glazed aluminium or timber bifold leaf is substantial. Over time, the internal ball bearings within the roller carriage can fail due to "material fatigue." Once one bearing goes, the load is distributed unevenly, leading to total carriage collapse.
2. Flat Spots on Wheels
If your doors have been dragging, even slightly, for a long period, the rollers stop spinning and start sliding. This friction wears a flat edge into the nylon or stainless steel wheel. Once a flat spot forms, the door will "thump" or "hop" along the track, no matter how much you lubricate it.
3. Debris Buildup
External bifold tracks are magnets for outdoor debris. Stones, salt air deposits (common in coastal areas like Kent and East Sussex), and even small twigs can jam the roller mechanism, causing the wheels to skid rather than roll.
